Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932)
German photographer and sculptor (iron casting) most known for his artful, b&w extreme close-ups of plants collected in his Unformen der Kunst [Artforms in Nature] (1928--later edition with a brief, impressive preface by Georges Bataille, an uncharacteristic piece on the language of flowers) and Wundergarten der Natur [Magic Garden of Nature]. His photographs most remarkably capture form in its purity, originality. The photographs were originally intended as instructional guides for his sculpture students to see examples of organic form.
